Should Your Glasses Match Your Shoes?

heels-match-glassesYour mother probably told you to make sure your belt matched your shoes.  If you are a lady, maybe she carried this instruction to include your handbag too. But, what about your glasses?  Did momma have anything to say about them?

Never fear. Today I have the answer to this fashion enigma.  Drum roll, please.  Your glasses should match…

Whatever you want!

That’s what is so wonderful about glasses as a fashion accessory.  Designer eyeglasses can highlight, accent, or contrast with any piece of your wardrobe, your facial features, or even other accessories.

But, some of you need rules. I understand. So here you go.  Momma didn’t mention these, and you won’t find them in the Vogue fashion bible, but here are my principles for coordinating your fashion frames.

Principle One:  Choose a look and match that.

Are you going for cool casual or glitzy glam? What is your look du jour trying to communicate? Is your vibe more I’m serious about my job or I’m serious about fun after five?

No matter what you are wearing, the first principle is to identify the look you want to achieve and have your glasses match that!

If you are interviewing for that dream job, choose a serious frame like this one by Dolce and Gabana that screams, Hire Me!

Maybe you’re decked out in a hot, right off the runway ensemble…then this is the designer eyeglasses frame you need to match your look:

Perhaps your dinner date look is truly red carpet worthy.  Then try this frame from the Project Runway collection:

Notice, you don’t have to color coordinate your glasses. But, generally, if your style is more conservative, you’ll want the colors to blend or at least be from the same color tone family. (For example: Gold goes better with warm tones like browns (including tortoise shell), yellows, oranges, and autumn greens and blues. Silver goes better with cool tones like black and white, bright blues, pinks and deep reds.)

Principle Two: If you are a trend-setter or hipster, then break principle number one.

Glamming it up in a little red dress? Then you’ll need a big, black, plastic designer frame like this one by Dolce and Gabana.

For the gentleman who’s always on the cutting edge of fashion, this frame is a must-have:

Principle Three: Always have at least two pairs of glasses so you are ready to match whatever look your day or evening inspires.

You wouldn’t dream of only owning one pair of earrings, one belt, or one pair of shoes.  For the same reason you really need at least two pairs of stylish fashion eyeglasses frames.  So, they better be affordable! That’s why I love Eyeglasses World. Since all of their eyeglasses are either 2 for $78 or buy one get one free, they make cool possible.  Pick two different looks so you are ready to match (or not match!) your designer eyeglasses with your shoes, hair, necklace, or those skinny jeans any day or night.
