2020 Resolutions: 20 Ways to Keep Your Eyes Healthy in 2020

2020 is here! This just may be our favorite year ever at Eyeglass World because our resolution is to help you see 20/20 in the months and decades to come! If you’re setting some resolutions for the new year, why not include one or several from our list of 20 ways to help keep your eyes healthy in 2020!

1. Eat Your Vegetables

You’ve never seen a rabbit wearing eyeglasses, right? There’s some truth to that old adage. Vegetables contain lots of vitamins that help protect your vision. Add a second helping of spinach, kale, carrots, or greens to your diet this year.

2. Wear Sunglasses

Your eyes need protection from the sun, just like your skin. Make sure you only wear lenses that are ophthalmic quality, or you may just be letting in more of those dangerous rays than you know. Check our full selection of UVA & UVB blocking sunglasses here.

3. Walk Outside

Did you know walking can help your vision as well as your overall health? By giving your eyes a little break from a screen and by getting that blood pumping you can do wonders for your eyes by just taking a stroll.

4. Drink Water

Dry eyes can be painful, especially if you wear contact lenses. But did you know that drinking enough water can help fend off dry eye? Make sure you’re getting your 6 to 8 glasses each day.

5. Change Your Contacts

Don’t wear old contacts and don’t wear contact lenses for longer than the prescribed wear time. Otherwise, you could really hurt your eyes through infection or worse. Contacts are medical devices, so use them as prescribed and keep those eyes happy!

6. Wash Your Hands

Did you know that keeping your hands clean can help you from spreading infections to your eyes? Even during allergy season, regularly washing your hands can help fend off uncontrollably itchy eyes. Be mindful of how clean your hands are before scratching or rubbing your eyes.

7. Eat Eggs

Did you know that eggs contain lutein, vitamin A, zeaxanthin and zinc—four nutrients that can ward off cataracts, glaucoma, and even age-related macular degeneration.

8. Change Your Pillowcase

Washing your pillowcase can help keep your eyes healthy, keeping dirt, allergens, and germs away from your eyes while you sleep. Wash in hot water every few days and do your eyes a favor!

9. Stop Staring Every Hour

Take a break from staring at your screen at least once every hour when you’re working. Taking a 60 second break every 60 minutes gives your eyes the rest they need from the hard work of screen-staring!

10. Get Your Eyes Checked

If you haven’t had an eye exam this year, what are you waiting for? One of the biggest keys to your eye health is a regular eye exam from a professional optometrist like the ones at Eyeglass World. Make your appointment today!

11. Wear Your Glasses

If the doctor’s prescribed eyeglasses for you but you tend to forget to wear them, why not make that your resolution this year? If you need glasses to read, work, or drive, make sure you are wearing them or your eyes could suffer from having to work too hard.

12.  Clean Your Contacts

Make sure you’re using the right solution, cleaners, disinfectants, and cleaning cases for your type of contact lenses. Otherwise, your lenses may not be getting clean enough when you aren’t wearing them. Every cleaning system has its own set of directions and recommendations, so make sure you’re following them.

13. Carry Eye Drops

If you wear contact lenses and your eyes feel dry from time to time, consider carrying re-wetting drops with you. This will help your eyes feel more comfortable in your lenses. Moist eyes are happy eyes.

14. Blink

Did you know that when you’re staring at your phone or tablet, you don’t blink as often? Be more intentional about blinking, forcing yourself to do it more often. This helps prevent your eyes from drying and gives them the tiny refresh break they need.

15. Keep Your Glasses in Their Case

You can’t see well without your glasses, so taking good care of your glasses is, therefore, important to your eye health. Put those glasses in a case before you throw them in your bag or purse. This will protect the lenses from scratching and help you see more clearly through them for longer!

16. Have Some Almonds

Almonds are high in Vitamin E and this can help keep your eye tissues healthy. Consuming foods high in Vitamin E helps prevent age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. If you don’t like almonds, try sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, or peanuts.

17.  Don’t Smoke

Smoking is bad for your health, and your eyes. Watch out for second-hand smoke too.

18. Exercise

Regularly getting your blood pumping improves your circulation which means better oxygen circulation through out your body—including your eyes.

19. Go To Bed On Time

Getting a good night’s sleep gives your eyes the long rest they need to regenerate cells and recover from the work of the day. Get to bed early (turning off your screens at least an hour before bedtime) and you’ll feel and look better. (Bye-Bye eye bags!)
