What Should I Match To My Glasses?

I have a confession to make. I have a compulsive need for my eyeglasses to match something I’m wearing.

Certain days it’s my outfit. I’ll color coordinate my summertime yellow dress with my Vera Bradley floral print frame with the little pops of the same yellow color on the temples.

Other days, I like to match my glasses to my other accessories. Nothing would be more ridiculous than wearing large gold earrings with a clashing eyeglass frame, so I try to get that right. Gold frame with gold jewelry, silver frame with silver jewelry.

But, other days, I’m just not sure what my glasses should match. So, I do a more general sense of style categorization. I call it “casual look” versus “dressy look.” Here’s how it goes. If I’m wearing a pantsuit or cocktail dress, than I try to wear my dressier looking eyeglass frame. Sometimes this is my designer frame with just a touch of gold or animal print (like some of the stylish ones by Daisy Fuentes). Other times, my choice would be a colorful plastic frame, like these from DKNY. Usually they’ll have just a bit of bling to give them a more a dressed-up style.

When I’m going to the gym or out for a casual Saturday of running errands, I like to keep my eyeglasses a little more casual. Colorful or smaller eyeglass frames can make a fun statement. Lucky for All Mankind makes some incredibly chic fashion frames that happen to look great with jeans (because, after all, that’s what we all know Lucky for anyway, right?).

And then there’s sunglasses… In the world of sunglasses, I think the rules can be thrown out the window and the mantra “Have fun” should rule the day. I don’t try to match my sunglasses to anything, except if I’m wearing brown tones, I generally prefer my warmer tone (brown or tortoise shell color) sunglasses. If I’m wearing black or gray, I usually choose to pair with my outfit my black plastic Ray-Ban sunglass frames.

With sunglasses, it’s fun to have a super stylish, stand-out frame with the most unassuming of outfits. On the other hand, it’s great to wear a simple pair of sunglasses with a straight-from-the-runway fashion look.

So, what’s best to match with your glasses? Here’s the truth: You can match whatever you want! Just make sure you have enough pairs of designer eyeglass frames (I recommend at least two pairs) so you have some options when you get dressed in the morning!
