Diamond Contact Lenses

Chandrashekhar Chawan of India recently introduced the first ever diamond contacts. Not just any diamond contact lenses, gold-plated contacts, garnished with 18 individual diamonds.

Chawan, though faced with seemingly more criticism than praise about his creation, is confident his luster-filled look will be the next big thing in fashion.

“People take time to digest [new fashion], until some celebrity starts using it,” he said in an interview to Today.com

However, interview reviews say something different. Internet critics, including eye professionals, have literally bashed everything from the materials used, to the overall look of the lenses.

How These Contact Lenses Are Made

The type of contact used by Chawan is a Boston Scleral lenses, a lens very rarely prescribed and generally only for those with severe eye disease. These lenses are usually bulky, and are filled with saline solution prior to being entered into the eye. Because of their size and design, Chawan was able to place the jewelry within them in such a way that the gold or diamonds don’t touch or scratch the cornea.

Boston Scleral lenses are used as a last resort for those with a severe eye condition, which is why many doctors have voiced their opinions opposing Chawan’s cosmetic use of these lenses. Also, because of their size and “bulk,” they aren’t comfortable as conventional contacts.

Diamond Contacts: What People Are Saying

Not just the material has been criticized, though. The look of these lenses has gone through some pretty strict scrutiny as well.

These contacts have been called demonic, tacky, alien looking, and have been said to “just look painful.”

Regardless of all critics, the creator of the lenses is resting assured that is just a matter of time before people realize he has revolutionized the way we perceive, or will perceive, jewelry.

“Instead of offering a diamond ring to propose, people will use diamond studded contact lenses,” Chawan told Today.
