Should My Glasses Match My Outfits?

My favorite pair of eyeglasses (this month at least) are my navy blue ones. I couldn’t pull off a black hipster eyeglass frame, so the navy is about as edgy as I could get.

But one question I’ve always wrestled with is: how much should my glasses match?

If I have navy blue eyeglass frames on, do I need to make sure I have a touch of blue somewhere else in my outfit du jour?

Can I pair a cool color like navy – which really looks better with silver – with my gold earrings and other jewelry? Do I need to buy a pair of eyeglasses in every color so I can always make sure to have a frame on hand that matches?

So, I asked a friend who is a professional stylist.

Her recommendation: Glasses should blend, but they don’t have to match.

And I think that’s a great rule of thumb.

To make sure that your glasses always blend, you’ll need at least two pairs. (And that’s okay, because Eyeglass World offers 2 pairs for $78!) You’ll want to be strategic with your frame choices so that your new specs can blend with your whole wardrobe.

If your wardrobe has a lot of both warm and cool tones in it, then choose one frame in a cooler tone (think about colors that look good with silver like black, bright pink, white, or bright yellow) and one frame in a warmer tone (think about colors that look better with gold like cream, orange, certain blues and orangeish-reds).

If your closet is filled with a more limited color scheme, then chose a more neutral eyeglass frame and a more colorful one. The neutral frame can be at the ready if you are wearing an outfit filled with color and patterns that need to stand on their own. The brightly colored eyeglass frame can be on hand if you are wearing a more monochromatic color scheme and need an accessory to add a little pop to your ensemble, or if the color of the frame is your outfit’s accent color.

My best recommendation before you go eyeglass shopping is to do a quick closet inventory. Think about the three colors you have the most of in your closet, right now, today, and make your frame decision based on those hues. I suggest even wearing your wardrobe’s most popular color into the store when you go to pick out your frames.

And don’t despair! The staff at Eyeglass World is very helpful, and they will make sure that you choose designer frames that look great on you and meet your budget.
