Matching Your Glasses: The Rules of Style

Fashion rules change. Sometimes so fast it’s hard to keep up. Just when you learn to belt your shirt or roll up your jeans those fads change and you have to adjust. Fashion is fluid…so if you want to keep up with “the look” it requires staying on your toes.

Then there are eyeglasses: one necessary accessory that you can’t overlook – because their presence is often noticeable, but one that is not often talked about in terms of how to match them or wear them.

So, today I’m going to give you 3 rules of style for coordinating your eyeglass look.

Rule #1: Match Looks Not Color

Does wearing your purple glasses require you to dress like Barney the dinosaur from head to toe? Of course not! In fact, I’d go so far as to say you don’t even have to have that same shade or any shade from the family of your eyeglass frame color. But, you do have to match the look.

Simply, what that means is if you have funky, colorful frame on, wear an outfit that can keep up and hold it’s own with an attention getting pair of eyeglasses.

Rule #2: Add Glasses First

So, let’s say you have a great new dress but you aren’t sure how to accessorize it. Do you really need to go out and buy a new necklace and pair of earrings to match? Maybe or maybe not. My advice: Put your glasses on first. Accessorize around your glasses instead of around any other piece of jewelry because your glasses will be what people notice first since they rest on your face.

Rule #3: Frame Your Face Not Your Clothes

The most important rule of thumb when you are choosing a fashion eyeglass frame is to find a frame that looks good on your face. Don’t worry as much about the frame matching the clothes you are wearing or the concept of a fashion look that you have in your head. Make sure that the shape of the lens, the size, and the colors look good on you! The first thing people will notice is how that frame looks on your face, not with your clothes. Take your time choosing some great pairs or shop online using the virtual try-on system and your picture to really get a good feel for how the glasses accentuate your facial features.
