2015 Pantone Color of the Year: Marsala

I heard it announced just this week: the 2015 pantone color of the year is going to be a color called Marsala.

Marsala?

Makes me think of one of my favorite dishes at a local Italian joint. I didn’t even know it was a color. Turns out though, that the tasty wine that spruces up a chicken breast inspired the color’s name.

The shade is best described as a type of red that is kicked down a few notches and headed towards pink. Some have used the term terra-cotta, although my initial thought is that sounds a little lighter than it appears. A pinker burgundy better describes it, in my humble opinion.

It’s actually a color that I really love. I think it’ll be brilliant in the winter, paired with black or navy or even a crisp winter white. A great pair of marsala skinny jeans, tights, or leggings would look beautiful with a top featuring just a touch of the color as an accent or in a solid contrasting color. Marsala is also a beautiful look for a dress. I’ve seen top celebrities sporting red carpet looks in this color already.

The other thing about this hot color tone is it just so happens to be a great shade for all skin tones. In fact, it’s considered more of a neutral color–meaning it is not overly warm or cool in hue. For this reason, marsala is also going to be come a hot color for cosmetics. Blush tones and lip tones that embrace the marsala shade will soon become must-have makeup staples.

The best way to start adding some marsala to your wardrobe right away? Accessories. I saw a gorgeous marsala-colored wool hat with a feminine looking brim online earlier today. You may also want to check out some statement jewelry featuring this tone. Marsala earrings or bangle bracelets also will give you some options to add a little of the color without going to a lot of expense. You could easily add a touch of marsala to your dark colored business suit with a tasteful scarf in the shade.

Of course, my favorite fashion accessories of all are my designer eyeglasses. While the shade is new so the name “Marsala” may be hard to find, there are plenty of beautiful burgundy looks available at Eyeglass World, like this gorgeous pair from Cosmopolitan:
