Makeup and Eyeglasses

Many women are hesitant to wear their glasses because they think they have to choose between wearing glasses and wearing makeup.

Don’t miss out on a great pair of fashion eyeglasses just because you think you’ll have to sacrifice your makeup.

In fact, designer Gai Gherardi says,

“When it’s done well, there’s nothing more beautiful than eyeglasses and a beautifully made-up eye. It’s like framing a lovely picture.”

At Eyeglass World, we work with beautiful designer frames every day. They’re like art on their own, and they should accessorize and amplify your look. We don’t believe glasses should be just for the days you feel like “slumming it.” Nor do we believe that they should be something you just wear at night or at home.

But because most women fear they’ll end up looking like Mimi from The Drew Carey Show, we’ve decided to cover some basic “how-to’s” for women. So here we go!

How to wear makeup and eyeglasses:

To begin with, if you have a bold color, wild frame keep your make up subtle. (Someone should have told Mimi about this great tip.) You do not want your makeup to be competing or even matching your funky frame. However, if you have a rimless frame, you have more room for a dramatic look and a wider range of colors.

At the same time, keep in mind that the type of prescription you have does affect the way the lenses make your eyes appear.

Nearsighted Take Note

If you are nearsighted, your lenses will make your eyes seem smaller. Therefore, you should use a light colored eye shadow and dark liner on your top eyelid.  (It’s always a good idea to use cream based makeup to prevent flaking or smudging.) Also use a lot of highlighter (women know what I am talking about) to counteract the minimizing effect of the lens. The light color on the inner parts of your lower eye will help to brighten and pop.

Farsighted Means Magnification

However, if you are farsighted, your frames will work to magnify your eyes. In this case it is best to use darker shadows and little-to-no mascara. Mascara usually works to amplify your eyes; therefore, it works better for those with a nearsighted prescription. If you do use mascara, always remember to curl your lashes to keep the mascara from rubbing onto your lenses from your lashes.

If you are farsighted and your eyes are magnified behind glasses, you want to make sure to pay attention to the area around your glasses as well. The use of eye serums and good concealer can help minimize the appearance of any lines or imperfections. But did you know anti-reflective coating (AR coating) on your lenses can also help control the magnification as well as glare?

Eyeglasses play as a great accessory to a well-done look.

Play around with different types of frames, and experiment with your makeup to find what you like best so you can wear your glasses out loud and proud and not just when you’re in your PJs.
