Is Navy Still the New Black?

A few years ago, we were told that gray was the new black. Then, last year, navy was the new black. So, as I searched for the perfect base colors to go with some new seasonal items I purchased a few days ago, I wondered: Is Navy blue still the new black?

My thought: It seems to be true!

Although I noticed a healthy amount of black in the stores as well, it seems that black’s second cousin navy is holding its own in the world of fashion. There is also a continued trend of pairing navy blue and black together, which would have been a major fashion faux pas just a decade ago. Mix a navy long sleeve, button down with a black leather belt or black jeans and you are on the cusp of great style. Better yet, pair a black and white striped dress with a navy pea coat.

I really like the color navy as a base. It naturally has a bit more warmth to it than black does (despite being a cool color), so it pairs well with colors like ivory, cream and tan. When you pair it with bright colors like yellow and orange or even stark white, you get an overall look that really pops. Navy ponte pants, camis and tees should be the staple items you purchase for your seasonal wardrobe if you don’t have them already.

Navy generally looks great with either gold or silver, giving you just one additional reason to totally love your dark blues. I’ve seen a lot of great jewelry in both colors this year, so it’s nice to know you can add accessories versatility to your wardrobe when you add more of this great fashion color. This also applies your metal eyeglass frames.

Navy glasses are still a hot look this season too. As I’ve confessed before, some of us just can’t pull off the black glasses frame look. But many (like me) have been surprised when they see just how great the same frame style can look in the color navy. Here’s one of my favorite pairs of navy frames from Project Runway.
