If you wear eyeglasses and live an active lifestyle, you know that this can be a difficult combination from time to time. So what do you do? Should you buy sports frames? Wear contacts? Wear your normal glasses? Or just go without? Our fashion experts Des and Erin weigh in.

The question: What is the best eyewear solution for physical activity like sports and exercise?

Des_Headshot-sDES: Well, I think we can start by agreeing that going without any kind of corrective eyewear is a bad idea for any activity.

erin-head-sERIN: I agree. If you need corrective lenses, they need to always be present, especially when you’re being active. And if you’re involved in any kind of extreme or contact sport, your normal glasses are probably a bad idea, too.

Des_Headshot-sDES: Agreed. It’s too easy for them to fly off or become damaged, potentially hurting you or someone around you.

erin-head-sERIN: Are we actually agreeing on something?

Des_Headshot-sDES: I believe we are! But we still haven’t answered the question yet.

erin-head-sERIN: This is true. To answer the question then, I think that contact lenses are the best bet for physical activity.

Des_Headshot-sDES: Ah, there it is. Something I can disagree with. Sports frames are definitely the way to go.

erin-head-sERIN: It was bound to happen eventually. Contact lenses are the perfect solution! Your peripheral vision isn’t inhibited by frames, and you don’t have to worry about anything falling off.

Des_Headshot-sDES: Sport frames are designed to stay in place. And while they won’t give you the same peripheral access as contact lenses, they also won’t get lost in your eye or fall into the dirt, never to be seen again.

erin-head-sERIN: That happens far less with contacts than you might think. I use them for running and exercising all the time, and most professional athletes who need corrective lenses use them as well. Plus, there aren’t very many feminine sport frames.

Des_Headshot-sDES: You may not look runway-ready when you put them on, but your eyes will thank you. Your vision should be as precise as possible when engaged in any kind of extreme or contact sport, and eyeglasses are the best way to achieve that. Contacts may be fine for running or a gym workout, but those who engage in more intense activities where eyeglasses are permitted should look into a good pair of sport frames to truly protect their eyes from being hit or scraped, something contacts cannot do.

Sigh. They were so close to actually agreeing. But they both had great points! Depending on the type of activity in which you participate, a different solution could be better for you.
