Hot Trends: How to Wear Loose-Fitting Pants

Not built for skinny jeans? Me either. That’s why the latest trend in bottoms brings great news to those of us not built like rails. Loose-fitting pants: they’re back! Some call them boyfriend cut, and others will refer to them as baggy. Whatever they’re called, they’re often more flattering than the skin-tight styles.

Floral prints, solids, or whatever pattern you can imagine are showing up in flowing, lightweight fabrics. The trend is loose and comfortable and easy to wear…if you know how.

When choosing a pair of loose-fitting pants, you’ll want to keep in mind how much attention you are comfortable drawing to your bottom half. If you are feeling body confident, go with a bold pattern or floral design. If you are trying to disguise a baby belly or draw attention away from your hips, then stick with subtle, solid colors or vertical stripes for a more slimming look.

Another important thing to note: Choose pants that stay wide all the way through the ankle if you want a more slimming look. And try to avoid letting them hang all the way to your foot; rolling them at the ankle or pegging them is far more flattering.

Also, pants that start at your waist instead of your hips can add an illusion of height and provide a more thinning overall look. If you don’t want your legs to look bigger, then avoid baggy pants that are tapered at the bottom or fitted around your ankles. This look is hard to pull off unless you are taller with a particularly thin frame.

The most important fashion rule to apply to your loose-fitting pant look is to keep everything else trim and fitted. When your pants are oversized, your top should not be. Choose a form-fitting, solid-colored top with a coordinating, slim-cut cardigan to go with a pair of pretty-patterned baggies. Or think about coupling a camisole and dark, sheer overlay with a solid colored dressy pair for work.

What shoes do you wear with your loose-fitting pants? Well, heels of course. This will add height and give you room to walk without tripping over your pants legs. You can choose a pair of pumps with a thin heel, or even a pair of wedges for better stability. I have seen some fashions that include a pair of combat boots that are worn under the pants leg, but this is another look I’m not sure everyone can pull off.

If you are also wondering what accessories to wear with your baggies than look no further than your closest Eyeglass World. Like with your top, a slimmer or more subtle frame would work well here. But you want there to be some girly interest to balance out the baggy pant look and elevate it to a more high-fashion aesthetic. I love this frame from Lucky with a pretty pink interior:
