Break Out Your Culottes: Wide Legs are Back

It’s official. One of the hottest trends is a rebellion against the skinny pants of seasons past. This, frankly, is a huge relief for those of us ready to dress comfortably and still wanting to be stylish.

Culottes, they are back. And, if you can imagine a skirt split in two, you’ll know exactly what this season’s hottest style looks like. I’ve lived through the culottes trend once. I never thought it would return…but, I’ve been wrong before! (I made the same bet about leg warmers…).

I like a solid colored culottes, like black or white with a cute contrasting or even flowered blouse. Most people think that you need to wear something skinny, or smallish on the top so you don’t look like a tent. But, that’s not necessarily the way to wear this fashion trend. Tops pairing with this seasons culottes are mid-sized. Some even stretching down to the top of the thigh. Remember if your top is too slim-fitting you’ll look like you are all bottom in the culotte trend. So, balance is really the key.

If you are a wilder fashionista than I am, then you can find culottes in any pattern you can imagine. Animal print, geometric shapes, flowers, all of the previous together…you name it. I’m seeing some wild designs on these broad legged pants and you can pair them with a variety of tops in different colors for lots of outfit options.

The best shoes to wear with culottes? There’s no simple answer here either. You can pair your culottes with cute ballet flats or with stiletto heels or you can also throw on some Keds for a casual look.

The best glasses to wear with culottes? The skies the limit here, too. But, I’d stick with modern, plastic and chunkier looks. As with thinking about your top, too slim of a glasses look may look off with wide legged pants.
